This Deschutes National Forest route has sometimes been used as Loop 1 of the High Cascades Wild 100 Race.

The other High Cascades 100 loops are covered on the Swampy Lake Tr23 and COD Tr71 pages.

As with the Edison-Lava Tr31 ride, the best ride profile occurs when the loop is best started from the Lava Lake campground.

Starting the CCW loop from the Lava Lake campground gets the big Kwolh Butte-Tot Mountain saddle ascent over in the first 7mi.

This is followed by the Dutchman Creek ascent, a moderate 3mi, 800' climb to the Dutchman Flat TH area, then 15 miles of downhill back to Lava Lake. Epic stuff.

Metolius-Windigo Tr99 - Quinn Creek Tr1 Loli

Starting from the Lava Lake TH, and sometimes approached from Sparks Lk Tr4, a 17mi (1600' ascent) Metolius-Windigo Tr99 - Quinn Creek Tr1 lollipop provides the best ride profile when started from the Lava Lake TH.

  • TH: Ride the sometimes technical, rooty trail along the east side of Lava Lake, followed by a 300' ascent (near Red Crater) which peaks at 2.9mi. The terrain is flat and fast alongside Hosmer lake, with a brief 150' ascent to the Quinn Creek Tr1 intersection on the left at 5.1mi. Cross a creek at 5.8mi then ascend 330' to the Appaloosa Tr13.2 intersection.
  • 7.2mi: At the ride summit, go left on Appaloosa Tr13.2. After 1mi of slow descent, at 8.2mi the trail quickly descends 300' to the Katsuk Pond Tr13 intersection at Quinn Spring Meadows.
  • 8.9mi: At Quinn Spring Meadows, go left onto Katsuk Pond Tr13 and ride around the meadows to FR450, then go left to Quinn Creek Tr1.
  • 9.8mi: Quinn Creek Tr1 runs out the end of the parking area at the Quinn Creek CGView of the Quinn Creek Campground TH

, alongside Quinn Creek at the base of Moolack Butte. Ride along the creek, with a brief climb as the trail runs along the northern end of Hosmer Lake.
  • 12mi: Go right at the Metolius-Windigo Tr99 intersection and enjoy the 5mi downhill back to the Lava Lake campground.
