The area doesn't have enough elevation change to create truly epic rides, but the clustering of several good rides near a resort area makes this one of the best Southern Oregon mountain bike destinations.

High Lakes Tr6200 is an easy OAB ride, which could start from Fish Lake or from Lake of the Woods.

Also check out Rye Spur Tr3771.

Nordic Activities

The area has a number of Sno Parks and forest roads which are used for nordic skiing and snowmobile use, with the following Sno Parks near SR140: Fish Lake Sno-Park, Summer Home Sno-Park, Summit Sno-Park, Great Meadow Sno Park and the CR722 Pederson Sno-Park.

For trail maps and other Nordic Ski info, check out Southern Oregon Nordic Club.

To the South, the Hyatt Reservoir area Nordic trails are covered on the Chinquapin Mountain Tr454381 page.

Directions: Park at the Visitors Center, across from the fire guard station on SR140. View Larger Map. No Map?.

Mountain Lakes Wilderness

Mountain Lakes Wilderness contains a cluster of four shield volcanoes, the highest of which is 8208' Aspen Butte. Formed several million years ago, covering 85 square miles and towering over 12000' prior to its collapse, the peak was one of the giants of the southern Cascades.

Several dozen small lakes lie at the base of several large large cirques carved by Ice Age glaciers.

Mosquitoes are ferocious in this area until August. Feel free to try the natural repellents, and avoid drinking carbonated drinks prior to riding, but Deet 100 may be the only protection from 'the swarm'. Expect some trailside poison oak and prepare as needed. Try using Tecnu before the ride.
